8 June (Wednesday)

Kyu Jong: Today is the day we set off to Japan. Is the day I start on my first musical challenge in Japan. Other than that, it’s also the 6th year anniversary of our debut as SS501 members. Today is such a meaningful day for me. Arriving at Kyoto via Osaka, we head over to the theatre to check on the sound system and stage. Why am I shivering… If I were to put it into words, I’m now feeling really odd about this. This isn’t the stage that I’ve always been working on, but a brand new stage? But seeing the Minamiza theatre with my own eyes is really great! Looking at the audience from the stage, I can feel the heat in me and also feels fortunate at the same time. The first day here, I’m already looking forward to working in Kyoto.

9 June (Thursday)

Kyu Jong: Not sure if it’s because it will be my first show soon, I’m not able to sleep well, lying and turning around on my bed for the whole night. To be honest, I still have a very long way to go. I’m also thought about being the main lead for my first attempt in musical, can I do well? Been thinking about all these. But there’s always theteam & cast, who have been supporting and giving me energy. Because of them, I have got energy. When rehearsal starts, I was looking at Run-hyung’s rehearsal. Maybe because I’m only familiar with dancing and singing during rehearsal, so I’m still very new to this. Where to walk, costume, sound systems, have to check all of it one by one. After getting used to the stage, I felt more relax. How should I put it, when standing on the stage, I can feel that I’m alive. Feels very relax and fortunate. It feels really good to be able to stand on such a wonderful stage. Many people will come to watch our show tomorrow right? Yes, I’ll definitely need to prepare myself well! After rehearsal, drank nice citron tea to soothe my throat from all the rehearsal, I lied on the bed. Now my heart is also drumming, all my nerves are working towards the stage.

10 June (Friday)

Kyu Jong: Raining morning. Got waken up by the rain. 8am! Used to sleeping late and waking up late in Korea. I’m not used to waking up this early. Finally, it’s tomorrow. Looks like it’s still not time yet, but yet tomorrow is already our first show. So, for our last rehearsal! For the last round of check, every staff and cast members gathered on the stage. Starting our final rehearsal feeling really nervous! For everyone, for ourselves, for the show, I will work hard. Because it’s a stage like this, so I felt that I have to work even harder. Tomorrow, our Goong! Goong Goong Fighting! Fight Goong! Must have a good dream tonight!

11 June (Saturday)

Kyu Jong: Open my eyes, thinking. Thankful, thank you. Really thankful to be able to welcome such an important day. First stage! Was so nervous that I don’t even feel hungry for not eating anything. After makeup, hair styling, putting on the costume, this finally felt real. At the backstage, team congratulated the few of us on our musical debut, shouting “Goong Fighting!” together. Knowing that all the audience have already been seated 5 minutes before the show starts, my heard starts drumming again. “So, I’m Prince Lee Shin. The Prince Lee Shin that no one will be able to do anything to me.”With this determination, I got ready to go on stage. Finally, the bell rang, show starts. Musical debut stage! The moment when I stand on the stage with lights and audience cheers shining on to me, how will it feel like. So, I’m not Kim Kyu Jong, but I stood on stage as Prince Lee Shin, and completed my first 2 hours and 30 minutes debut show. During ending, everyone sang together. Really, I just teared. This is an unforgettable debut performance.

Thankful, thank you. Audience who flood the theatre to watch our performance, also people who help make this wonderful show, and many who have worked hard for us, I’m sorry that other than Thank You, I don’t know what else to say, I will do my best till my last stage.

Kim KyuJong Musical ‘Goong’, Crossing the Sea to Japan ‘Sold-out Everyday’ 

Japan is also in the musical ‘Goong’ craze.

Musical ‘Goong’ has its first performance on 11-Jun in Japan, and recorded a sold-out for days, creating a new wave in Japan. The major newspapers in Japan were all reporting on Korea’s ‘Goong’ which is playing in Kyoto currently.

Audiences from all over Asia such as Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, etc, went to Japan in order to watch ‘Goong’. Some of them who couldn’t get the tickets crowded in front of Minamiza theatre and held a surprise demonstration to request for ‘Additional plays in Kyoto’.

An influential daily newspaper in Japan published a report on 16-Jun “High praises for musical ‘Goong’”, where they evaluated “The performances of Korean musical ‘Goong’ in Japan shows the unique outlook on the world as per the original work and the unique vividness of the musical, coupled with the high standards of songs in Korean musical and the specialty of Kabuki theatre, the musical performance in Japan has more creativity and the musical was done even more powerful than the performances in Korea.”

Asahi newspaper added “In the historical theatre in Kyoto Japan where it is the hometown of Kabuki, watching Korea’s musical about the imperial family, about the country and traditional culture. It tries not to be binded by the existing concept of musical plays. The cultural, historical meaning of Musical ‘Goong’ should be given attention to.” Showing their anticipation with the positive publicity for Korea Musical ‘Goong’.

Despite being his first musical performance, Kim KyuJong (Lee Shin) showed an excellent calm capability and skillful musical actress Kwak SeonYoung (Shin ChaeYoung) said her thanks for the supports “All the actors/actresses were deeply touched and encouraged by the cheers and applause from the audience who filled up the theatre. It is a fact that there was uncertainty among actors and actresses whether the Korean musical will be welcomed by Japanese audience or not at the beginning.
However, they now feel confident thanks to the warm and passionate response from the audience.

Kyu Jong said as follows:

I was surprised that the audience answered in Korean "Ne~~~ "(lafone : Yes) to the requests by Mr. Kwon official (lafone: an official who takes care of Prince Shin), he acted as a narrator of the story, chats something interesting on the stage, speaking some Japanese which brings the audience into an explosion of laugh.

He asked the audience at the very beginning of the musical not to take pictures, nor videos, etc. “not to do” things . We all answered “ Ne~~ agesumida”(lafone : Ye~~~~s, All right !”in Korean. ) 

I am also happy that all the casts worked hard to speak some Japanese which was well accepted and got good reaction and laugh from the audience. I also see green penlights on the occasion of curtain call, which made me really happy, knowing that the fans continue to support me. I really appreciate it. Though we have more number of performances left, but thanks to the energy we receive from the audience, we will work harder to make it much better.

Mr. Yujun, who acts as Jeong-Yul, Mr. Sun-yong (Chegyon) and others are very unique and charming as well. Especially, the rising horse is RUN, thanks to his singing ability, getting much popular now after his appearance in TV.

I went to watch musical (Goong) which started on the 11th of this month on Tuesday.
I interviewed Kyujong san (who is starring as Shin Prince) before the show. He relates that he was extremely nervous on the first day and was even trembling throughout.
However he sounds pretty relax today even though my interview is just prior to the show. Perhaps because today is already the third day of performance.
Can I say Kyujong san really is a nice guy!
Even though it was a pretty rushed/impromptu interview, he was all ready, waiting for the interview to begin when I arrived.
“Wants to take a photo, can? Will it be alright?”
“Yup, no worries, go ahead.”

Kyujong san was very hardworking during the show, great voice projection in his singing, living up to the name of Prince Shin, making me very touched.
Frankly, he speaks in a very gentle, warm voice, greatly different from during singing~!
After the performance, inadvertently had a small chat with the audience next to me, “great effort!”
As compared to (Goong) in Korea last year, there is better flow in the current storyline, emotions amongst the characters are more intense too.
I had a short chat with Run san too. Run related in a rather anxious tone that after seeing Kyujong san’s stage performance, felt that he is really great, hence will have to work hard for his (Run’s) own shows too…
Kyujong san is already very good but I heard from sources that Run san is even better in terms of singing, hence am also interested in Run’s show.
And Run san is also very handsome.
Good match to Prince’s image.

Musical Goong which illustrates the wonderfulness of Korea Royalty, started its performance in Minamiza Kyoto on 11-June.

In the almost full audience, with SS501 Kim KyuJong leading the charismatic actors/actresses for their enthusiastic performance, leading the audience into the world of palace, the ending scene won lots of applause.

After the play ended, audience were chosen by random draw to have a fan sign as well as photo-taking session with the actors/actresses, the fan service seems to largely satisfy the audience.

Musical Goong will be on till 1-July, they will also have fan sign event, photo-taking event and after-talk event planned amongst the schedule.

Kyu Jong well transformed himself into Prince Shin, cold and
arrogant, not knowing how to intreract with other persons, but
eventually recognized that he's fallen into love with his princess.

The fencing battle with his rival was really hot as well as
his dance perfomance for high school festival which showed us
a glimpse of SS501 Kyu Jong. His also sang two solo ballads
and a duet song "Perhaps Love" , very sweet and touching.

In spite of his soft and elegant look, he well performed
Shin's dual personality, lonesome, eager for love, as well
independent spirit. He is no more a humble guy !

The scenario of Goong itself was very interesting.

Debuted as the group SS501, singer Kim KyuJong transformed into an arrogant prince.

The fantasy setting musical 'Goong' successfuly kicked off its first performance in Japan where all the seats were sold.

On the last 10th of June, the first performance in Minamijwa Kabuki Theater in Kyoto, Japan have started. Many of the audiences came from Korea, Taiwan and other parts of Asia to support.

Filled with overflowing emotion, Kabuki Theater is the perfect place for musical'Goong' for its peculiar atmosphere to capture the audiences' hearts, and when the show starts, the appearance of Kim KyuJong dressed up as the Prince making the entrance would heat up the atmosphere.

Shortly after the performance, Kim KyuJong's counterpart, Kwak Sunyoungwho acts as Shin ChaeKyeong praised 'So far until now, Kim KyuJong was the most humble among the musical Goong team. However, during the performance on the stage today, Kim KyuJong was totally opposite. So, I don't know that Kim KyuJong could be so indifferent on stage who is a Prince'

Kim KyuJong said, 'The musical feels different and unique. Although I feel intense terribly, I still have to live up my energies for the musical. However, the first performance ended safe and sound, and because of the audience's support, I will work my best as the Prince for every performance'.
